For her third album as White Hinterland, producer/vocalist Casey Daniel decamped to her parents' basement in Massachusetts, where she erected a home studio and recorded Baby's 10 tracks. At once introspective and bursting with energy, the set mixes influences ranging from '90s pop-R&B to contemporary indie rock, thumping and grooving amid diva vocals one minute ("Baby"), careering into choral freakouts the next ("Sickle No Sword"). In stylistic ambition and vocal chutzpah, Baby makes a great companion to St. Vincent's self-titled album released the same year, yet it possesses its own singular grace, as exemplified by the album closer "Live Without You," a majestic piano track as befitting a church choir as a dark club.
