Hymns for the Christian Life (Deluxe Version)

Bringing together Celtic and bluegrass elements, Keith and Kristyn Getty find fresh ways to revisit old gospel verities on Hymns for the Christian Life. Now living in Nashville, the Irish married couple benefit from the expansive production of Charlie Peacock and Ed Cash while remaining true to their acoustic roots. Crucial here is the involvement of such luminaries as Ricky Skaggs (who adds his rippling mandolin to the scripture-based “Simple Living”), Alison Krauss (who sings on a remake of the Gettys’ much-loved “In Christ Alone”), and Clannad’s Moya Brennan (lending her vocals to the Celtic lullaby “A Mother’s Prayer”). Beyond these guest stars, the album shines for its sensitive portrayal of the human experience lived by the light of faith. The humble laborer’s prayer “Before You I Kneel,” the worshipful hoedown “Nothing but the Blood," and the socially conscious, reggae-tinged “Kyrie Eleison” are among the highlights on this consistently strong effort. “Wedding Song”—a stunning showcase for Kristyn’s rich vocals—closes Hymns on an exalted note. The Gettys do it all with a blend of the traditional and modern that gives the album a timeless feel.
