Felt

About Felt

Rap duo Felt started out in the early 2000s as a side project inspired by an inside joke, but grew over the years into a serious group marked by detailed production and kinetic chemistry between its emcees. Top-name producers lent their talents to each of Felt's few and far between albums, with Ant from Atmosphere working on their 2005 sophomore LP and returning to the fold for 2020's Felt 4 U. Felt initially started as a joke between friends Murs (from Living Legends) and Slug (from Atmosphere) after a discussion came up during a 2001 joint tour about their shared adoration of Christina Ricci. This conversation extrapolated into a full-on project and the next year, Slug went to L.A. to work with Murs, taking only eight days to write and record A Tribute to Christina Ricci, the first music from their new group Felt. The album was produced by the Grouch and released in 2002. Three years later, Murs and Slug used their second album, Felt 2: A Tribute to Lisa Bonet, to focus their efforts on another celebrity. This time around, production was handled by Ant. The album came out later that year on Rhymesayers, as did a reissue of their debut. In 2019, yet another celebrity-fixated Felt album materialized with third installment Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez. The Aesop Rock-produced record was the group's most ambitious to that point. It would be another 11 years before the next chapter of Felt's discography. Fourth album Felt 4 U arrived in August of 2020, with smooth, organic production that drew from classic hip-hop. ~ Marisa Brown & Fred Thomas
