J Chris Newberg

About J Chris Newberg

Known for incorporating original music into his standup act, J. Chris Newberg is a comedian originally from Birmingham, Michigan. He sometimes catches audiences off-guard by introducing explicit or candid material amid more affable observational humor. A quarterfinalist on America's Got Talent in 2011, he released his first comedy album, Sucker 4 a Pretty Face, in 2002. A writer and producer for TV game shows and reality series including Idiotest (2014-2017), he has also contributed jokes to a variety of late-night shows as well as Saturday Night Live. He topped the Billboard comedy chart for the first time with Live!!! (And Let Dye) in 2018. J. Chris Newberg began his career in entertainment as a singer and songwriter. After playing in rock bands that didn't seem to have a future, he went solo, did sketch comedy for a while, and then gradually developed a standup style that incorporated both improvisational comedy and singing/songwriting. He released his first musical-comedy album, Sucker 4 a Pretty Face, via BSeenMedia in 2002. It included songs about pop culture, relationship discord, and his hometown of Detroit. Chris Alive II followed in 2003 on the same label. He hit the national club circuit and toured as opener for Dane Cook before the two collaborated on a song for Simon Cowell's final appearance on American Idol in 2010. That led to his being recruited as a contestant on the sixth season of America's Got Talent in 2011. Newberg made as far as the quarterfinals after being voted through by judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne. Mandel enlisted Newberg as a writer on his reality series Deal with It in 2013, the same year Newberg began as a writer/producer for the Hulu game show Money Where Your Mouth Is. He joined the crew of the Game Show Network series Idiotest as writer/producer in 2014. Capturing a 2017 performance at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan, Live!!! (And Let Dye) was released on 800 Pound Gorilla Records in 2018. It went to number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart, a first for Newberg. ~ Marcy Donelson
