Swimmin' Time (Deluxe Version)

Swimmin' Time (Deluxe Version)

This Charleston, S.C.–based husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst continue to explore the deep, dark Americana of their 2012 album O’ Be Joyful on 2014’s Swimmin’ Time. It's another finely executed piece of the ever-growing weird-old-America movement that’s taken the blues, a dash of Tom Waits’ brown sound, and the vibe of iconic murder ballads and given it a genre of its own. There are even unusual harmonies in spots that recall the shared vocals of X's John Doe and Exene Cervenka. The five-plus minutes of “Evil” show a masterful execution of the fever dreams that a young Nick Cave once battled early in his solo career. “The Devil Is All Around,” “Ohio” (not the Neil Young song), and the gentler acoustics of “After the Storm” and “Stono River Blues” capture a tribal, sea-shanty atmosphere, while “Mary Ann & One Eyed Dan” settles on a folksy, quick-stepping groove to get its point across. The deluxe version adds two bonus tracks, including the Tom Waits/accordion–type “The Ice Will Melt” and a video for “The Devil Is All Around.”
