Sugar at the Gate

On their third album, TOPS fully luxuriate in silky soft pop filled with breezy melodies that are cozy and familiar. Jane Penny's Feist-like purrs have a sunny, AM-radio feel while gliding through waves of glimmering synths on the indie-pop opener, "Cloudy Skies.” She then shows the sweet restraint of classic R&B on "Further" and explores blue-eyed soul in "Petals." The sultry flow of "Marigold & Gray" has slinky Lindsey Buckingham–influenced guitar licks filtered through a woozy Ariel Pink–like vision.
