A proud member of the power pop underground bred by the growth of the Internet, Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Kenny Howes released several D.I.Y. pop records before going the more traditional route of forming a band, the Yeah, and signing to a proper record label. Born in 1970 in the suburb of Mulberry, FL, Howes bounced through a variety of high school and college bands in the late '80s and early '90s. While temporarily based in Tallahassee, Howes recorded and self-released two solo cassettes, Nothing Wrong With That in 1993 and In Between in 1994. Although these tapes were one-man-band affairs (with the exception of drummer Kelly Shane), Howes formed a band, the Curious Yellow, with Shane, guitarist Bob Anthony, and bassist Ben Pringle (later replaced by Chuck Vaughan), which toured the southeast while Howes continued his solo studio career. With Shane's continued drumming help, Howes recorded and released 1995's Nothing Wrong With That (re-recorded versions of songs from both cassettes) and 1996's excellent Kenny Howes' Second Album, the record which first scored Howes some national attention. Shortly after the release of Kenny Howes' Second Album, Howes broke up the Curious Yellow and he and Shane relocated to Atlanta, GA. While the pair recorded 1998's Back to You Today!, Howes met guitarist and keyboardist Jason Nesmith, with whom he started collaborating in the psych-pop side project Orange Hat. Howes and NeSmith, with Shane temporarily absent to attend to other projects of his own, formed Kenny Howes and the Yeah in late 1998, with Wayne Glass on drums and Kyle Harris on bass. Shane replaced Glass quickly and the band began touring the country much as the Curious Yellow had. Howes signed with Atlanta's Second Heaven label and the group started recording their first album in 2000. In the meantime, Second Heaven released 2000's The Right Idea, a compilation of remixed tracks from Howes' three previous albums, plus some outtakes and rarities.Kenny Howes and the Yeah! followed two years later, their first for Royal Fuzz. ~ Stewart Mason
