After a clutch of releases emphasizing different aspects of their pluralistic approach, The Direction of Last Things sees Intronaut lending equal weight to their many interests: Each song is an intricately balanced exchange between metalcore intensity, interstellar overdrive, and precision-guided post-metal. Commanding opener “Fast Worms” mutates from roaring riff-work to jazzy interplay, and the equally epic “The Unlikely Event of a Water Landing” gradually sinks into oceanic guitar shimmer and fretless bass. “The Pleasant Surprise,” the most propulsive cut, serves as an enthralling showcase for Danny Walker’s superhuman drums.
