Jeremy Enigk’s first solo album, 1996’s Return of the Frog Queen, was a delightfully weird chamber-folk album that suggested the leader of emo-core titans Sunny Day Real Estate was ready to move on alone and establish himself as a left-of-center, modern day Syd Barrett.  Well, he reformed SDRE, started up the Fire Theft and (finally!) ten years later returns with his solo follow-up, World Waits, that’s nothing like what his first solo album suggested. Just as the world has changed in those ten years, so has Enigk’s approach. World Waits is much grander in scope -- anthemic and atmospheric where Frog Queen was quick and humble. Things begin with an instrumental introduction (“A New Beginning”) before leading into Enigk’s pleading “Been Here Before.” An emotive singer, he gives his unrestrained all to these tales of spiritual toil and redemption. While much has been made of his Christian devotion – it led to uneasiness in SDRE – these tunes are hardly tethered to scripture. Enigk channels his faith into what he sees and hopes for the future. A grandiose tune such as “Cannons” is not unlike the secular U2 or Snow Patrol or Keane in the music’s quest for grand transcendence.
