Publisher Description
Making advanced stats simple, practical, and fun for hockey fans
Advanced stats give hockey’s powerbrokers an edge, and now fans can get in on the action. Stat Shot is a fun and informative guide hockey fans can use to understand and enjoy what analytics says about team building, a player’s junior numbers, measuring faceoff success, recording save percentage, the most one-sided trades in history, and everything you ever wanted to know about shot-based metrics. Acting as an invaluable supplement to traditional analysis, Stat Shot can be used to test the validity of conventional wisdom, and to gain insight into what teams are doing behind the scenes — or maybe what they should be doing.
Whether looking for a reference for leading-edge research and hard-to-find statistical data, or for passionate and engaging storytelling, Stat Shot belongs on every serious hockey fan’s bookshelf.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hockey analysts and sportswriters Vollman, Awad, and Fyffe compile an informative but dense guide to hockey analytics for fans looking to enhance their predictive skills. The authors explain statistics such as shot-based and possession metrics, expected save percentage, goals versus salary, goals versus threshold, and shot-quality neutral save percentage. The book offers various models intended as tools to predict hockey success in a wide range of areas and to help settle perennial hockey questions such as who is the best draft pick or best goalie. It includes some provocative takes on the best way to build a team and predicting the future success of junior players. Readers will need to absorb an extensive array of statistical notions, formulas, and figures probably more suited to hockey executives and coaches than the average fan. This is a passionate account of the merits of hockey analytics, but fans are more likely to use it as a reference guide to particular statistics than to read and digest it cover to cover.
Customer Reviews
Very Good Entry Point
An extremely well written and easy to understand explanation of hockey analytics. As someone who has only dabbled in the past, this book did a fantastic job of explaining certain things I couldn't understand previously. Also leads me to further research and understanding of the topic.
Best Hockey Book Available
This is probably the most generally informative hockey book available that all hockey fans should read. Normally informative would infer a lack of entertainment to the average person, but this book is also a very enjoyable read.
An example would be a textbook. That is a very informative book that isn't written in an entertaining or enthralling manner.
Stat Shot is the best of both worlds. It is a very compelling read while also being able to teach new things to someone like myself who has their own analytics website and is already very knowledgeable on the subject matter.
