Publisher Description
The Great God Pan is a novella written by Arthur Machen. On publication it was widely denounced by the press as degenerate and horrific because of its decadent style and sexual content, although it has since garnered a reputation as a classic of horror. Machen's story was only one of many at the time to focus on Pan as a useful symbol for the power of nature and paganism.

Excellently creepy novella
A good 100-ish page story told in a way that I think works remarkably well in the horror genre. Not a particularly difficult read, and with a lot less of what I think to be the weaknesses of Lovecraft’s works. It’s clear why Lovecraft himself was a fan, and Machen’s work is one of the first that I found I genuinely had a hard time putting it down.
A classic tale of the macabre
More of a weird happenings tale than one of terror or horror. Some very vivid descriptions of landscapes and characters. The story is solid, and it is pretty well told. This isn't a story that builds to a climax in the modern sense.
Phantasmagoric story
Very well written. I seldom read this type of literature yet I must admit I read it in one sitting. The writer did an extraordinary job of keeping the reader’s interest all the way to the end. Excellent story.
