Escapements

The second album from Brooklyn duo Beacon patiently explores the overlap between hushed electro-pop and late-night R&B. Their rhythms vary: "Cure" rides a flickering footwork beat, and "Preserve" adopts house's steady pulse, but mostly, as on "Backbone" and "Still," they follow the broken syncopations of bass music. Synths rarely rise above the level of a whisper, nor does Thomas Mullarney III’s voice, a breathy falsetto that suggests shadow-dwellers like Sade and Talk Talk. "I'm you," he sings on the opening "IM U," summing up the intimacy of music that feels more dreamed than heard.
