The Witch

The Witch

Originally a punk duo, London quintet Pumarosa grew more rhythmic and electronic as they added members. Then, apparently via osmosis, their sound became rockier when they rehearsed in Palma Violets’ studio. The result is this set of thrillingly sinuous, genre-splicing songs. “Priestess” builds from an ominous hum to an enrapturing psych groove, “Snake” wrangles scuzzy riffs into urgent techno, and “Honey” is a swell of spiky, purposeful rock. Bandleader Isabel Munoz-Newsome is a magnetic presence throughout, with a vocal intensity that variously suggests PJ Harvey, Björk, and Ian Curtis.
