Live Horses - EP

Needtobreathe’s live shows often take the band’s rootsy brand of Southern rock to even higher plateaus. Live Horses gives a taste of the emotional intensity and instrumental prowess that the South Carolina combo displays on stage. Recorded on their 2009-10 tour, these five live cuts make the band’s connection with the jam-band subculture explicit. Expanded versions of “The Outsiders” and “Let Us Love” are freewheeling excursions filled with blazing guitar outbursts and rolling rhythmic passages. “Prisoner” is rendered with particular intensity, roared out by singer Bear Rinehart with teeth-gnashing fury as his band wails behind him. In a more wistful vein, “Stones Under Rushing Water” is served up as an aching duet between Rinehart and singer/songwriter Serena Ryder. “Valley of Tomorrow” — recorded live at Charleston’s Plantation Studios, rather than on stage — lets the group wax optimistic in a luminous acoustic setting. Live Horses shows how expansive Needtobreathe’s vision can grow when the night is right and the audience is roaring along with them.
