Live from the Artists Den: 2012 (Live)

The TV series Live from the Artists Den has been thrice Emmy-nominated, and there’s no denying that these live recordings are top-shelf quality. Rufus Wainwright opens with “Out of the Game,” as he and his band play at New York's Church of the Ascension and his voice soars with nary a hint of Auto-Tune. Norah Jones bestows a spot-on rendition of “Say Goodbye” that she and her band recorded live from the Green Building in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn—and the sound quality here is equivalent to the best studio money can rent. You can hear an enthusiastic audience talking in the background at the historic Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco’s North Beach, as Jakob Dylan leads The Wallflowers through “Love Is a Country.” That actually sounds more like a live recording than the preceding tracks, as does Death Cab for Cutie’s “You Are a Tourist,” recorded in the Brooklyn Museum.
