Under the pseudonym King Krule, Archy Marshall offered spiky jazz guitar and deep, slurred vocals. On his first album under his own name, he draws on trip-hop and ’90s hip-hop, grafting crackling beats onto smeared backing tracks. “I fly solo”, he declares in raspy tones over the spooked synths of “Buffed Sky”. On the wistful “Ammi Ammi”, he sings about a girl playing him Barry White all night, but it’s more about escaping into a noir-ish world through headphones than heading to the bedroom.
