About Frode Gjerstad

Norwegian reedman extrordinaire Frode Gjerstad began to hone his boundary-expanding sound as a teen in the 1960s. After a brief sojourn in Sweden to study economics, the lure of the muse proved too strong and he returned to his homeland in 1975. By the 1980s, Gjerstad was a known force in the free jazz world, collaborating with the likes of Derek Bailey, Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, and Evan Parker. Some of his most involved work came in partnership with drummer John Stevens, with whom he performed as Detail until the latter's death in 1994. Gjerstad's later work included many acclaimed trios, one of which included innovative downtown bassist William Parker.
