Trasatlántico is an exquisitely over-the-top homage to ’80s rock. Oddball pop whiz Aleks Syntek revels in the neon-soaked excess of the era, riffing on jittery New Wave (“Sin Aliento”), stomping glam metal (“Vístete”) and gleaming synth-pop (“A Cada Paso Que Doy”). It all plays like the lost soundtrack to the breakneck shoot-outs, steamy romantic interludes and speedboat getaways of the original Miami Vice. Syntek is clearly having a blast as he revives the cheesy-but-catchy sounds of his youth, and his sincere enthusiasm is utterly contagious.
