Fantasize

Fantasize

After Kye Kye's debut album, Young Love, built up a considerable fanbase, the group (featuring Estonian-born, Pacific Northwest–based siblings Olga, Timothy, and Alex Yagolnikov, plus Olga's husband Thomas Phelan) set up a Kickstarter and raised more than $40,000 to fund their follow-up album, Fantasize. Producing the album with Chad Howat at Nashville's Bottom Bunk Studios, Kye Kye brought in a number of guests to build out their ethereal/ambient pop-rock. “I Already See It” introduces the album, as unassuming synth chords are met with an explosive introduction that settles into Olga’s sweet spot. Kye Kye sometimes resemble a mix of acts from the labels 4AD and Creation Records, as well as Sigur Ros; see “Honest Affection” and “People," plus the title track, where the sonic atmospheres are so heavenly that it seems almost impossible that no one ever found their way here before. And where some albums fall off somewhere in the second half, Fantasize features several of the album’s best songs near the end: “Seasons,” “Softly," and “Hiding Place.” For closure, the band opt for the instrumental “Celeste,” a beautiful and appropriate ending.
