For an album whose title references obsolete technology, X Ambassadors’ debut is defiantly modern, ignoring anything so old fashioned as genre boundaries. With the assistance of Rihanna/Imagine Dragons producer Alex da Kid, they reconfigure anthemic rock into glitch-pop (“Fear”), folk-hop (“Renegades”) and “Nervous”’s busy synthesis of folktronica, drum & bass and R&B. However, the one element that unites all the songs is as old as rock & roll itself: huge, high-altitude choruses.
