About the author
Sunday Times bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane was born in Scotland in 1976 and her unnecessarily confusing name is pronounced Vah-Ree.
After some efforts at journalism, she started writing novels and her first book, You Had Me At Hello, was an instant success. She’s now working on her tenth book and lives in Nottingham.

Mhairi McFarlane’s Inside Story: “She is very true to one of my mission statements: to ensure that my heroines are architects of their own downfall. I mean, she kisses a guy on his wedding day. I was interested in taking a situation where you would automatically think, ‘My God, she must be the worst person in the world,’ and then actually digging into how it came to happen. Through that digging, you realise in full context that, fine, it wasn’t Edie’s finest moment, but she’s in no way someone who would set out to do something like that. I really liked the moral complexity.
“I’m also not really interested in arguments where one person is clearly right and one person is clearly wrong. I quite like the realistic messiness that tends to be the reality. What seems to segue really well in this book is that now we’ve got social media, everybody thinks they know everything about everybody else’s lives. I quite like the way Edie creates a fiction of herself online, which I think a lot of us do to some extent or another. Then, thanks to her actual behaviour, it all comes crashing down. She tears down her own life. The very forces she’s been harnessing to make herself look good are then turned upon her because she’s the vixen of the piece.
“I definitely like writing heroines that f*ck up, because we all do. If we all look back on our lives, how many bad situations have we been in in which we couldn’t find a single cause ourselves? That we’ve done nothing wrong? I mean, it just doesn’t really happen, does it?
“I love this book because people seem to keep finding their way to it. It didn’t come out with an awful lot of fuss, but it seems to be the one people are still reading years after it came out. Very foolishly, I wrote an open ending, too. In my mind, it wasn’t open at all. But by choosing not to write that one piece of dialogue, I have been ridden so hard online for years. The book’s currently under option with really good producers at the moment, which I’m quietly screaming about. So who knows if we might see it on screen one day…”

Witty, smirk inducing, read
The fourth in a series of books than create a wonderful glee whilst reading, and a sense of place. A great self confident heroine, who you like from the start, and a contemporary commentary on fame/social media hysteria. An easy read and an empty feeling when it's over. Can't wait for the next one.

Loved yet another of McFarlane’s books they’re such an easy read & full of ‘real-life’ incidents that are so easily relatable (apart from the gorgeous actor that you don’t generally get to meet!) Just love how Mhairi encounters relationships with friends, family & even neighbours almost a little self-help in there with such wisdom thrown in in bucket loads! Next!
