About Roxanna Panufnik

Regardless of the context for which she composes—and that includes symphonic music, opera, film scores and choral work—Roxanna Panufnik has consistently aimed to create pieces that uplift and unite, in particular attempting to bring together people of disparate religions. She was born in London in 1968, the daughter of famed Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik. She began writing music when she was just three years old, and at age 16 her Requiem was performed at Chichester Cathedral. Panufnik studied at the Royal Academy of Music. An abiding interest in international regional musical traditions has infused her work: Four World Seasons (2007-11) is a response to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, but she sets each movement in a different part of the globe, subtly drawing upon Albanian, Tibetan, Indian and Japanese influences, while her Tallinn Mass (2011) mixes a conventional Latin Mass with writing by contemporary Estonian poets.
