Singer/songwriter Natalie Prass’ debut album absolutely simmers with slow-burning soul. Gorgeous melodies, memorable hooks and sophisticated strings and horn arrangements give these nine songs a cohesive mood. Standouts like “Bird of Prey” and “Your Fool” play like a cross between Dusty Springfield and classic Philly soul without sounding overtly retro. Prass’ understated, intimate voice is both delicate and darkly sly—a perfect pairing to the gentle and sweet touch of the Spacebomb Records house band. The result is an impressive and assured debut that deserves close attention.
