Essential Albums
- Though Isabelle Boulay scored her big break in a mid-’90s production of the perennial Québécois rock opera Starmania, her second solo album offers a down-to-earth antidote to the big stage spectacle. It’s a sunset-gorgeous set of Cajun-spiced roots rock. But its intimate environs can’t contain the outsized emotion Boulay brings to her performances, whether she’s investing the bluesy “Les yeux au ciel” with a cat-in-heat restlessness or transforming the post-breakup sentiment of “Je t’oublierai, je t’oublierai” into a statement of defiance.

About Isabelle Boulay
After achieving success as a stage performer, Quebec-born Isabelle Boulay issued her debut solo LP, Fallait Pas, in 1996. The 1998 follow-up, États d'Amour, proved Boulay's commercial breakthrough, galvanized by the smash "Je T'oublierai, Je T'oublierai." She also earned Best Female Singer of the Year at the annual Félix Awards. Mieux Qu'ici-Bas (2000) made her a star in France, where she won Best New Artist honors at the Victoires de la Musique awards. Benjamin Biolay and Pierre Jaconelli co-produced Boulay's 2004 effort, Tout un Jour. De Retour à la Source followed three years later, reaching the number two spot on the Canadian pop charts. ~ Jason Ankeny
