Every song on White Denim’s Stiff is permeated by a mighty crunch of guitar from start to finish. And, usually, that means fingers flying at breakneck pace through blazing, white-hot garage rock dipped in soul, as epitomised by the highway-bound groove of the opening “Had 2 Know (Personal)” and the stomp and crash of “Mirrored in Reverse.” The Texan group only take a break from unleashing these swaggering hooks during the sexy slink of “(I’m the One) Big Big Fun,” a warped workout that conjures lava lamps and shag carpets.
