Hungarian-born pianist Laszlo Gardony is a master of modern jazz who can reach deep into abstraction but also connect authentically with the down-home feel of “Georgia on My Mind”, the lead-off track to Serious Play. A heady rendition of John Coltrane’s “Naima”, and “Over the Rainbow” meditates on the classic song. Elsewhere on his own material (“Forward Motion”, “Truth to Power”), Gardony is capricious and daring, seeking complex harmonic and rhythmic pathways.
