About Spiritualized
Already a key figure in England’s 1980s psych underground thanks to his role in the druggy and droning Spacemen 3, Jason Pierce convened Spiritualized in his native Rugby in 1990. The new group—which would go through many lineup shifts in its first decade—expanded both his saturated sonic vision and signature themes of disheveled romance and redemption on 1992’s debut album, Lazer Guided Melodies. Pierce only set his sights higher from there, incorporating gospel, blues, soul, and other classic American song forms across Spiritualized’s career-defining 1997 statement, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. A sweeping, symphonic quest through Pierce’s spiritual and cosmic preoccupations, that album would cast a long shadow over his output to follow. Yet Pierce has never shied from its legacy, even paying audible homage to that creative turning point on “Always Together With You,” the deeply layered opening track of 2022’s Everything Was Beautiful.
